The Start of Uploading Quality Conversions (Google Ads Edition)

How OCT and EC4L Work

When you hear OCT or offline conversion tracking, it’s a good thing. Just realize Google fucked up the nomenclature. It should be called Quality Conversion Tracking — it’s specifically for online search users.

First, why is it important?

Google’s algorithm needs quality signals to optimize. Raw lead volume isn’t a good signal. An uploaded GCLID tied to a closed deal is. Build the infrastructure that feeds it that, and the machine starts working for you instead of against you.

All those Google reps pushing AI Max and Performance Max aren’t wrong, just misguided. They don’t realize that for those initiatives to drive meaningful results you need OCT/EC4L. Otherwise Google will get you the lowest quality conversions available — aka spam.

How does it work?

For every search in Google, they generate a unique identifier specific to that search and user. We call it a GCLID — short for Google Click ID.

How do we capture it?

First you need auto-tagging turned on (Google Ads setting, on by default). Then you need to capture it at the moment of conversion — form fill, phone call, chat, appointment scheduler, booking engine, etc. That GCLID is uploadable back to Google Ads.

What if we don’t capture it or it gets stripped?

This is where EC4W and EC4L come in. Use automatic collection in GTM with the User Provided Data event. The higher your enhanced conversion percentage, the better EC4L will work. Instead of uploading the GCLID, you upload the EC4L data and hope Google has a match.

What’s the actual difference?

OCT is deterministic. You have the GCLID, you upload it, Google knows exactly which search drove the conversion. Clean signal.

EC4L is probabilistic. You’re hashing PII — name, email, phone — and asking Google to match it against their logged-in user data. It works, but it’s a fallback, not a foundation.

What a complete setup looks like

Capture the GCLID on every conversion touchpoint. Store it in your CRM. Upload it back with conversion value and timestamp. Run EC4L in parallel as your coverage layer for the cases where the GCLID drops.

Don’t treat EC4L as the primary. Treat it as insurance.

The bottom line

If you aren’t doing this, you are optimizing towards raw leads, raw CPA, 30-60 second phone calls, and form fills from freelancers looking for SEO work or that industry’s equivalent of junk traffic. The whole point of this consultancy is to focus first on quality and revenue, then optimize up from there.
